Metric Arts´customer Finning-CAT success case using Cortana Intelligence Suite, was published by Microsoft in the “Customers Stories” selection, that showcase their best implementations around the world.

The dramatic contraction in the mining industry is forcing mining companies to find new ways to increase yields and reduce costs. Finning—the world’s largest Caterpillar equipment dealer—realized it could help customers improve operational processes with insight from an untapped resource: big data from machine sensors. Each machine has an onboard information system that gives mechanics diagnostic information. Although individually the data is modest, machines and applications could collectively generate more than 1 terabyte every 30 days. With hundreds of thousands of machines deployed globally, it’s been infeasible to create a business intelligence (BI) solution that can facilitate predictive analytics with the massive amounts of sensor data from customers’ fleets. However, given recent innovations in the cloud and the Internet of Things (IoT), Finning wanted to try. Cristian Barrientos, Performance Solutions Manager at Finning South America, says, “We understood we needed to change our value proposition. Our existing machines and the services were not enough to help our customers overcome their new challenges.” For example, with the right BI solution, Finning could help its customers determine what speed employees should drive each type of vehicle at each site to achieve the optimum fuel consumption and productivity levels, while minimizing machine wear.
